Spiritual Direction is “Discerning Inner Movements” in your life

I come with a Degree in Guidance and Counseling from University of Toledo, OH, a Masters in Theological Studies with a focus in Spiritual Direction from Washington Theological Union.

For me, Spiritual Direction is an encounter of sacred listening to help the person seeking direction to recognize God’s presence and direction in their everyday lives.

I see myself as an attentive listener, a companion …

I was first sought out as a spiritual director in 1977 while I served on our congregation’s leadership team.  In 1978, while still on the leadership team, I began professional training in spiritual direction at the Jesuit School of Theology in Milford, Ohio.  Previously I had received an M.A. in theology from the Seraphic Institute of Theology at the University of St. Francis, Joliet, IL where I chose several of my elective courses in the study of Sacred Scripture. Throughout the years.

Especially in the summers, I had other courses in spiritual direction in Chicago, IL, in Colorado Springs, CO, and in Orange, CA.

At no time in my life was I a full-time spiritual director.  Along with full-time ministry in congregational leadership positions for 20 years, or in serving the very poor as a social service minister in Tunica, MS on the Mississippi Delta for four years, or as the Director of the Rio Grande Border Witness Program at the southern border of Texas and Mexico for over seven years, or as the Director of Project Hope-Proyecto Esperanza, a legal immigration program for the low income in Archbold, OH  for seventeen years, always in addition, I had some individuals coming to see me regularly for spiritual direction.

As a spiritual director, I see myself as an attentive listener, a companion, who focuses on accompanying an individual in his/her daily life and relationship with God, helping the person to discern and celebrate God’s presence and direction in his/her daily life.

I am Sister Edna Michel, OSF. Spiritual direction, as I practice it, is a forum in which to process the events and discoveries of one’s life regarding identity, meaning, purpose, relationships and vocation/work. – all in the context of God’s continual guidance.  The director often doesn’t give answers; rather through deep listening, asks questions that allow a directee to probe his/her heart and mind more deeply, often leading to new self-discoveries and a deeper relationship with God.  Of course, such sessions are conducted in private, whether in person or via Zoom,  and what is shared is confidential.

I have a Masters’ Degree in Theology from St. Bonaventure University, New York and a Certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Institute for Spiritual Leadership. Loyola University, Chicago. I have been accompanying people in spiritual direction for about 40 years.  However,  I am not a licensed counselor or therapist. Currently I am serving on our congregation’s leadership team which limits the number of directees I can serve, but I will do what I can.  I periodically lead some group retreats, but do mostly individual spiritual direction.
