Korean Sisters:

The Sisters of St. Francis’ relationship with the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Service in Korea began after Father Juniper Cummings, OFM Conv., met Sister Heide Brauckmann, superior and founder, in Zambia. In response to the need for Korean Sisters to learn English before beginning missionary work, Father Juniper contacted Sister Virginia Welsh, then community minister, who invited the Korean Sisters to come to Tiffin to learn English.

The first Korean Sisters arrived in Tiffin February 14, 2003, for six months of study: (from left) Sisters Bernadetta Woo, Julietta Yu, and Vincentia Kim. On July 30 they left for Zambia. Sisters Stella Magers and Veronica Nowakowski visited them in Zambia in July 2005.

Shown here (back row, from left) are Sister Julietta, Sister Stella, a Zambian woman, Sister Bernadetta, Sister Vincentia, and some Zambian children.

Sister Goretti Kang arrived June 11, 2004. She is pictured here reading the Scriptures at Mass.

After spending time in Korea, she went to Ethiopia May 4, 2006, and served in the small poor village of Midagdu. On February 22, 2008, she moved to Addis Ababa, the capital, where she is preparing to open a formation house for her community.

Sister Benedicta Oh arrived in Tiffin September 15, 2006. She is shown with Sisters Roberta McKinnon and Virginia, the primary English teachers for the Korean Sisters.

Sr. Benedicta enjoyed a hot dog roast with Sisters Rozanne Swope, Mary Ann Lucke, and other sisters. Sister Benedicta returned to Korea August 23, 2007, and is ministering at St. Bonaventure House in Korea, caring for the elderly.

Sister Susanna Lee arrived in Tiffin October 11, 2007. Sister Susanna enjoys a moment in the meditation garden at the Tiffin convent.
